I remember the first time I visited the first of Istanbul’s fashion districts, I was astonished at the sheer size of it. I thought, “This is massive. Well in a city of 20 Million, where Textiles is the main business, there is no official count, it’s everywhere.

Needless to say it gets overwhelming fast, one can get lost for days! Most foreigners use a buying rep to navigate and source things. Sourcing the factories is essential to use a buying rep so as to avoid being overcharged.

Number 2: Logistics 

The shipping industry out of Istanbul goes back thousands of years and they have it down to a science. A very efficient science. Still in the crossroads of the world between three continents and easy access all around via waterways to all other worldwide ports, not mention access by air.

A bustling waterway between seas is the Bosporus Straight which surrounds the city’s many inlets! I love to marvel while sitting at a waterfront café at all the commerce going through at such a beautiful backdrop for a cup of Turkish tea watching the ocean liners go by. 

Did you know that the Bosporus Straight is a one way street/waterway? Half the day the tankers stream in from the Black Sea Southbound, while the other half of the day the ships stream in from the Aegean Sea northbound, no traffic jams in Istanbul, not on the water anyways at least.
